I have really enjoyed reading poetry as part of homeschooling. At first I wasn't sure if Eva and Wesley would catch on to it but they have rapt attention when we read poems and they like to pick out which poems to read.
A few poetry books we like are Read-Aloud Poems for Young People, and When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six by A. A. Milne. A good place to start for adults is The Poet's Corner: The One and Only Poetry Book for the Whole Family which is compiled by John Lithgow.
Here are some of our family favorites:
"The Adventures of Isabel" by Ogden Nash
Cute and gory at the same time. The kids and I memorized this whole poem in October for Halloween.
"Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll
Because who can resist nonsense words?
"King John's Christmas" by A. A. Milne
We read this to get excited about the upcoming holidays and now Wesley insists on getting an india-rubber ball for Christmas.
