As there is still much to do with getting settled (wonder when I'll consider us settled in? 3 years, maybe?) we've mostly been doing unschooling. I've worked pretty consistently with Wesley to learn his letters though. He knows all the short vowel sounds and he knows consonants up to "k." We've had an electrician come out a couple times to fix some wiring and Wesley follows him around and watches him closely. He also watched the cement man. We needed concrete on the edges of our driveway so Wes watched the cement get mixed, poured, and brushed. He also figured out a laser level and played with it alot.
On her own, Eva has gotten out some workbooks and spent some hours doing problems here and there. She has also been a voracious reader. In the last few weeks she has read the Friend magazine, The Wizard of Oz, Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web, and dozens of shorter picture books. In our science coop she learned about the earth's crust, weathering, and different kinds of soil. One night at dinner I decided we hadn't done any math in a while so I made up word problems for both the kids. They loved it and begged for more.
Various life skills learned recently: getting along with neighborhood kids, pounding fertilizer stakes around the fruit trees, painting citrus tree trunks, helping to put up a fenced area for the bunny, picking oranges, cutting oranges, putting dirty dishes straight into the dishwasher, dealing with being the "new" kid in the primary class, and learning that when mom says something needs to be done, there's no second chance and you better do it or you'll go to bed without dinner!
